31 More Ways to be Witchy in October

Day 5

October is a great month to expand your divination skills, or start a new divination practice. The veil between worlds is thinning, so it’s easier to receive messages from our spirit guides. October also begins the shadow season, when we look inside ourselves, reflect and think about things we need to change in our lives, so divination may help point you in the direction that you need to go. Today, we’ll focus on candle scrying.

Find a comfortable, firesafe space where you can sit and gaze at your candle flame. It’s better if the space is darker so you can see the flame and smoke clearly.

Get your tools together – candle, candle holder, matches, candle snuffer, a journal and a pen.

Light the candle and sit back comfortably. Gaze at the flame. Let your eyes relax into a light gaze, almost trancelike. Let yourself zone out.

Breathe steadily and focus on your question or intent. Stay relaxed and continue to look into the flame. Keep your question/intent in your mind.

Watch to see if any shapes or images begin to appear in the flames or smoke. Some witches see clear images and some get shapes or impressions. Don’t try too hard. Just let any images or thoughts come naturally as you look at the flame. Listen to the flame as well. Do you hear cracking or hissing? Some witches hear messages through the flame. Don’t worry if you don’t see anything, especially the first time. Each time you practice this, you are building your divination skills.

When you feel like you are done, extinguish the flame. Sit there for a few minutes to get your focus back and reflect on what you saw. Some people feel a little tired after fire scrying. Take some deep breaths and get grounded back into the room. Now write down any impressions, visions, or thoughts that you had during your session. What came up from your subconscious? How do your thoughts and visions relate to your question?
